Product Details

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a lovely OTTOMAN Turkish flintlock pistol made to follow European lines, often referred to as a Mediterranean Pirate's Flintlock Pistol. It has a carved stock with checkering and engraving on the back, and has all brass mountings, including a decorative escutcheon on the back of the wrist. The butt cap has the usual long ears, and the trigger guard goes almost all the way to the butt cap. The right "ear" of the butt cap does show signs of a repair, and the trigger guard must have broken off at some point, so it was field repaired with thick sheet brass for the last 2/3 of its length.

The pistol measures 16 inches in overall length, and features a 10 inch blued barrel, which has simulated proof marks and a lovely silver and gold inlaid design on the rear portion. The pistol has no provision for a ramrod, as those were usually carried on a leather thong carried around the neck, so that it could not be dropped during reloading at sea or on horseback.

In terms of condition, the pistol definitely shows long used in the field. The lock shows powder burn, and the stock shows some repairs with wood filler, and also has a crack on the right side to the rear of the lock plate. There is more cracking on the left wood line forward of the side plate. We checked the lock, and while it is somewhat difficult to cock, still functions correctly, holding at half cock and firing at full.

Dating probably from the early 1820s, this is a very nice example of the typical Ottoman flintlock pistols used throughout the Mediterranean area. Ready to display!
